Where Do I File A Connecticut Employment Law Claim?

Submitted by rtg on

If you are a Connecticut worker whose employment rights have been violated and you want to file an employment law claim in Connecticut here are the different agencies that you can file a Connecticut employment law claim with.

Connecticut Department of Labor

If you need to file a claim against an employer because that employer has not paid you all the money you earned or you have been the victim of wage theft or some other wage violation you will need to file a claim with the Connecticut Department of Labor. The Connecticut Department of Labor has a special division, the Wage and Workplace Standards Division, which investigates all wage and hours violations.

To file a complaint with the Wage and Workplace Standards Division you must go to the website and use the online portal. Or, you can complete the complaint at one of the state’s American Job Centers if you need help. Someone there will assist you.

Connecticut Commission of Human Rights and Opportunities

If you have been the victim of discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, sexual harassment, or another workplace violation by an employer you will need to file a complaint with the Connecticut Commission of Human Rights and Opportunities (CCHRO). The CCHRO investigates all workplace rights violations except for those related to wages and hours.

To file a claim with CCHRO you need to visit the CCHRO website. You can fill out a complaint using CCHRO’s online portal.  When you fill out a complaint against an employer for discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, sexual harassment, or any other violation of your rights you will have to submit evidence with your claim that shows your rights were violated.

It’s a good idea to have copies of documents like the employer’s policies on sexual harassment and discrimination, written correspondence, emails, texts, and other documentation showing that your rights were violated. You can submit those with your complaint through the portal.

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

The EEOC is a Federal agency, but they have jurisdiction to investigate any violations of Federal workplace laws in any state. If you were subjected to discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, or any other workplace violations for violating Federal laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the FMLA you can file a complaint with the EEOC. You can start a complaint with the EEOC online at the EEOC’s website or you can file a complaint in person. The EEOC doesn’t have any offices in Connecticut, but you file a complaint in person at either the Boston or New York EEOC offices.
